Project - Solar System - Social Housing Development
Location - Newry, Co. Down
This 29 unit development in Canal Street, Newry is part of the third and final phase of the Canal Street Regeneration Strategy which included regeneration and redevelopment of the area.
Kellys Renewable Energy Solutions designed, installed and commissioned 1 and 2 panel VELUX Solar Hot Water Systems in the new Social Housing development.
Our registered designer/installer carried out a site survey on the development before any installation work was to be carried out. It was established that solar systems were only viable for 18 dwellings due to shading and size restrictions on some of the dwellings. It was determined from the site survey that 17 houses would have a VELUX 1 Panel System installed and 1 house with a VELUX 2 Panel System.
Due to the construction timescale of the development and the nature of a timber frame structure, the Solar System was installed in two separate stages. When the roof of the houses were felted and lathed, the Solar Panels, tile flashing kit, temperature sensors and insulated piping were installed. Once the house was undergoing the second fix plumbing, the domestic hot water cylinder, pumping station and all relevant plumbing materials were delivered to site for installation. Once installation was complete, the systems were pressurised, tested and commissioned.
All construction on the development has now been completed and all the houses are now occupied. Each of the tenants within the development was demonstrated how to use the solar system so they could establish the controllers ease of use. The tenants have since commented that their solar hot water system is easy to understand and use. They also have noticed an inevitable increase in the supply of domestic hot water when solar energy is available.
This development demonstrates the capability of Kelly’s to install larger scale installation projects on schedule and to client specification. This project demonstrates Kelly’s expertise in designing, supplying, installing and commissioning renewable projects on large developments.
