Issue 1 - What is Renewable Energy?
Issue Date : 5th May 2009
WELCOME to the Newry Democrat’s renewables and energy saving section brought to you by Kellys Renewable Energy Solutions. www.kellys.uk.com
Over the coming weeks we shall be introducing renewable energy technologies with the various ways and means of reducing energy usage in your home.
What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy is energy generated by natural resources – such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat – which are naturally replenished.
Renewable energy technologies like solar panels, biomass boilers and heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular.
The main technologies are:
- Solar panels: can generate up to 70 per cent of the hot water you use every year, and even your own electricity. They work by using all forms of sunlight, not only relying on direct sunlight rays, meaning that you don’t need continuous good weather. It’s also easier to opt for solar power as planning restrictions are being eased on where panels can be fitted, in most cases you won’t need permission.
- Heat pumps: include ground, air and water source heat pumps. They all work to the same principle, using the same type of technology as your fridge – they take heat from one place and move it to another.
- Biomass boilers: burn waste products (such as wood or animal waste) to generate heat and hot water for your home. Wood pellet and wood chip are two common sources of biomass used for heating needs.
Grants of up to £2,500 per home are now available. These can be used towards the cost of installing solar panels, ground and air source heat pumps and biomass boilers.

Proposals in the 2010 building regulations envisage an increase of 25 per cent in energy efficiency compared to the current building regulations, placing a greater emphasis on integrating renewable energy technologies to your new build.
